Split, Croatia - 2 May

We picked up our rental car and left Venice on Thursday (29 April). We spent the afternoon visiting the caves at Postojnska which are supposed to be among the best in Europe (http://www.postojnska-jama.si/en/cave.htm). We took an electric train deep in the caves and took a walking tour. The caves are huge and have just amazing formations. We also spent a couple hours in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, which is a very nice town. We spent that night on a fram near the Postojnska caves where we we able to get a suite that sleeps 7 for $40 with breakfast. Things are very inexpensive here (except gas, $50 to fill the tank).
The next day we drove south to the Plitvice lakes (http://www.np-plitvicka-jezera.hr/page.aspx?pageID=87&lan=en) which we had seen on a PBS Nature program. This place was unbelievable with one series of waterfalls after another. We spent an afternoon and morning hiking around the waterfalls and got hundreds of pictures. Yesterday afternoon (Sunday, 1 May) we drove to the Dalmatian coast to Split (didnĀ“t see any Dalmatian dogs yet). There is a freeway under construction but some of the drive was on some pretty grim roads. (We even passed one area that had warning signs about mines in a field next to the road, left over for the 1991 war here.) Split is a big city that has a lot big Communist era buildings. It is does not make a very good first impression, but there are some interesting Roman ruins here. We probably will leave for Dubrovnik tomorrow.
